About Captain Transcribe

An independent transcription tool built for creators and professionals.

Why Captain Transcribe exists

Captain Transcribe started as a solo project by The Captain — an independent builder who wanted a simpler transcription workflow without enterprise sales calls or unnecessary features. The first version was a personal tool for subtitling YouTube videos. After friends asked to use it, it became a public product supporting 28 languages, with no investors and no roadmap dictated by quarterly metrics.

Our mission

Make editable audio and video transcription accessible to content creators, journalists, students, podcasters, video editors and researchers. Every plan supports TXT, SRT and VTT export; usage limits, retention and selected features vary by plan. AI output remains a draft to review before use.

How it works

Captain Transcribe uses speech-to-text services from AssemblyAI and OpenAI. Account files are stored on the application server in Germany and sent to the selected transcription provider as described in the Privacy Policy. Results can be reviewed, edited and exported in TXT, SRT or VTT with Standard, Short and Word-by-word subtitle styles. The interface supports 28 languages, automatic detection, custom vocabulary, editable timestamps and optional speaker detection.

Who Captain Transcribe is for

Captain Transcribe is built for people who use transcripts in real workflows. Creators export SRT and VTT captions, podcasters prepare editable drafts for show notes or website copy, journalists and researchers review timestamped interviews, and students subtitle lecture recordings. Processing time and accuracy vary with file duration, audio quality, language, accent and overlapping speech.

Independent and self-funded

Captain Transcribe is bootstrapped. No investors or quarterly board meetings shape the roadmap. Feature requests and bug reports go directly to the person building the product, so priorities can follow practical user needs.

Privacy and data handling

Your files remain yours. Account media and transcripts follow the retention period of your plan and can be deleted sooner from the application. Processing uses the providers and transfer safeguards listed in the Privacy Policy. Stripe handles payment-card data; Captain Transcribe does not receive the full card number. Export, deletion, consent and account controls are available in the product.

Editorial standards

Technical claims that depend on third-party products are checked against current primary documentation and linked in the relevant article. AI tooling may be used for drafting and rewriting; the publisher remains responsible for review, corrections and dated updates.
