Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about Captain Transcribe.
How long does it take to transcribe a video?
Processing starts automatically after upload. The time depends on file length, language and audio quality, and a progress indicator keeps you informed while the transcription runs.
Do I need to create an account?
No. You can transcribe up to 3 minutes of audio or video for free without creating an account, no credit card required. An account is only needed if you want to save your history, transcribe longer files, or unlock more minutes.
How accurate is AI transcription?
Accuracy depends on recording quality, accents, language and overlapping speakers. Treat AI output as an editable first draft: you can review the transcript in the player and add custom vocabulary for names or technical terms.
Which file formats are supported?
Supported formats are MP3, WAV, OGG, OPUS, FLAC, M4A, AAC, MP4, AVI, MOV, MKV and WEBM. The maximum upload size is 95 MB for signed-in users and 5 MB for the guest trial.
Can I transcribe in multiple languages?
Yes. Captain Transcribe supports 28 selectable languages including English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. You can use automatic detection or select a language, then compare the result on a representative sample.
Is my data private?
Access to your files and transcripts is restricted to your account. Processing may involve the transcription provider you select, as described in our Privacy Policy. Signed-in transcriptions are retained according to your plan (30 days on Free, 90 days on Starter and Creator, and until deletion on Pro); you can delete them sooner from your history.
What's the difference between SRT, VTT, and TXT?
TXT is plain text with no timestamps, ideal for transcripts and notes. SRT is widely supported by YouTube and video editors. VTT is the WebVTT format used by HTML5 web players. Captain Transcribe exports all three from a single transcription.
